Roquebrune-Sur-Argens

The Village – Roquebrune-sur-Argens

Location: Approx. 10 minutes drive from the house

The charming medieval village Roquebrune-Sur-Argens is located in an expansive pine forest, accentuated by the beautiful red cliffs of the Rocher de Roquebrune and cooled by the Argens river.  The ancient village was built on a rocky peak around the year 975, when the Saracens de Fraxinet were thrown out. From the village there’s a panoramic view out across the Argens plain to the north, with low mountains in the distance.

Sightseeing map

We have created this interactive map which shows the locations of the best sightseeing places to visit, the good restaurants, and we have marked the streets which are worth walking in red color. If you have this map available on your phone while visiting the town it should be easy to find everything:

Walking in the old town

Roquebrune has retained a lot of charm. One entrance into the old part of the village is through an archway at the base of a 16th-century watch tower, with the campanile belfry at the top. Narrow old streets run between the old buildings and past the 16th century church. One building on the little square behind the church has a lovely sundial on the wall (up the stairs). This is what a proper French village should be. There aren’t a lot of shops here, and what is there is not very big BUT the atmosphere is great.

The Chocolate Museum – a must visit

Roquebrune-Sur-Argens is a city of chocolate, and we recommend a visit to the Chocolate Museum  ‘Maison du Chocolat et Cacao’ which is set in a beautiful 17th century chapel. Entrance to the museum is free. It  previously belonged to to local master chocolatier M. Courreau and now belongs to M. Vinay who continues the tradition of producing a delicious range of speciality chocolates.
A highlight in the Museum is the ‘Choco- Mômes’ which is a part of the museum especially designed for children. Here you will find M&M figures, Tintin , Disney tins and much more. There are free fun sheets (in English or in French) and pages which children can colour in. In addition to the museum you will find not just one chocolatier, but three chocolatiers located in the heart of this Provencal Village.

Do not miss the chance to try nougat wrapped in chocolate, a speciality at the Chocolaterie Courreau just 2 minutes walk from the museum).

La Maison Du Terroir

This small museum focuses on local  quality products created by local farms. All year round La Maison du Terroir invites you to learn about, taste and buy local products: Wines, Honey, Nougats, Olive Oils, Tapenades, Jams (Confiture),  etc… So if you like good food, and high quality local products, this is the place for you. As they say on the Web page: This Boutique welcomes all gourmets!

“You must have dreamt of a place like this. A countryside where fruit and vegetables flourish in a rich and fertile earth, encouraged by a sun that shines continuously. A place where the flavours echo the vivid colours of the fruit and vegetables, where the scenery reflects what you find in your plate and in your glass. One delight after another. Stop dreaming – this land exists! It is here in Roquebrune, Les Issambres, and La Bouverie, between Cannes and St. Tropez.”

Maison du Patrimoine (Heritage Museum)

There is also a small museum celebrating local history and tradition dating back 1000 years at the ‘Maison du Patrimoine’. The museum includes a genuine 17th century ice pit among its exhibits. If you take a guided tour (consult the Tourist office for details), you will learn that  Roquebrune-sur-Argens has a history linked to the Templars and can can see the influence in the village…

Egilse St. Pierre St. Paul

This beautiful church is one of the main tourist attractions in the area and includes paintings and statues of great value.  The church also contains an organ which has been completely redesigned by Yves Cabourdin for it to be in perfect harmony with the church’s style ( xvi th  century). The church is listed under the Historic Monuments by order of 18 June 1987

Chapelle St. Roch

Within walking distance from the old town, you will find the the Saint-Roch chapel which was originally built with thin walls and a frame, so it is probably early Romanesque 11th  century. It was reinforced probably in the twelfth century by a doubling of its walls and the addition of buttresses to support the arch of stone that were built to protect it from fire. Originally, it was dedicated to St. Victor of Roquetaillade, because part of St. Victor’s territory was carved into the rock. It was renamed Saint-Roch, probably in 1480 when the plague was raging in Frejus. St. Roch lived at the XIV century, and became the protector that was invoked against the plague.
